Extended Project Qualificiation

The EPQ is a Level 3, research-driven course that high achieving students take alongside their main areas of study. It is a one year course that is usually taken spanning the first and second year of study.

Top universities are really keen to see students achieve the qualification, which is awarded at A level standard, between grades A* to E, as it demonstrates commitment and development of crucial academic skills.

Skills include:

  • Research technique
  • Critical thinking and argument technique
  • Time management
  • Self-reflection
  • Referencing
  • Essay structure and source engagement
  • Independent study and working with a supervisor
  • Academic presentation

Students must complete 120 hours of work over the duration of the qualification and can choose any topic they are passionate about. Many opt to write a 5,000-word essay, however, some choose to create an artefact and write a shorter essay alongside it.

Each year, two-thirds of students who complete the EPQ achieved a high grade, (A*, A or B). In four of the last six years, our students have achieved 100% – the highest mark in the country. So if you want to stand out from the crowd, and you are passionate about academia, this is the course for you!
