Our curriculum is designed to enable learners to gain the outcomes needed to achieve their aspirations and prepare for life beyond Longley Park. We provide a broad and balanced curriculum that is ambitious for all, in particular those with special educational needs and the most disadvantaged. We provide a curriculum that is responsive to the needs of our local community and in doing so offer a wide range of academic and applied general qualifications at Level 3, as well as a selection of Level 2 courses. Our learners can access a range of opportunities to support the knowledge, skills and behaviour required for progression, as well as opportunities to develop their interests and talents. As a member of our community, our learners are able to grow and flourish both personally and academically, as well-rounded citizens, ready to make a positive contribution to life in modern Britain.
Where students believe that they can’t, we support them to believe that they can. Our ambition is for all our learners to leave us with a better understanding of themselves, their own unique goals and in possession of the knowledge, skills and behaviours required to achieve them.
At Longley Park Sixth Form, your study programme is unique to you. It will depend on the GCSE grades that you achieve and your future plans and aspirations.
Level 3
Level 3 qualifications include A Levels and vocational courses in areas such as science, art, business and health. To study a Level 3 course at Longley Park you will need at least 5 GCSEs at grade 4 including your Maths and English. Level 3 qualifications will allow you to progress to university or onto an Apprenticeship.
Level 2
Level 2 courses at the Sixth Form are vocational courses which are equal to 4 GCSE grades. You will need at least 2 GCSEs at grade 3 (D) including English and Maths to study at Level 2. Each course will take up most of the time on your timetable and will have a strong emphasis on coursework.
English, Maths and Science GCSEs, and Functional Skills
You will need to take Maths or English if you do not already have a GCSE grade 4 (C). You will also need a grade 4 (C) in GCSE Science for certain career routes.
Wider Opportunities
Studying at the Sixth Form is more than just academic success. It’s about exploring new opportunities and developing key skills which help you stand out from the crowd. All students have the opportunity to take part in a wide range of opportunities outside the classroom. These include; volunteering, debating society, Duke of Edinburgh, High Achievers programme, Student Council, community liaison, becoming a Student Ambassador plus lots of exciting trips and events taking place throughout the year.
Academic Tutorial Programme
As a student at the Sixth Form, you will work closely with an Academic Tutor who will guide and support you in your studies. You will attend tutorial sessions each week as well as receive regular one-to-one support to help you track your grades and develop your learning plan. Academic Tutors will also support you with your future aspirations, whether this is to Higher Education, an Apprenticeship or employment.
Longley Park Sixth Form Curriculum
The curriculum at Longley Park Sixth Form has been specifically designed to ensure a motivating learning experience that meets the needs of all students with a focus on high expectations for all and a belief that all students will progress and fulfil their potential. We are ambitious for our students and believe that these ambitions are achievable.
The Longley Park Sixth Form curriculum will:
- Provide entry points for all young people progressing from Trust and other partner schools, with programmes at Level 2 and Level 3
- Raise aspirations and develop students’ belief that they can achieve, leading to excellent retention and progression to the next level of study
- Improve the English and Maths skills of all learners to support their main programmes and progression to further study and employment
- Remove barriers to learning for young people with complex needs, including SEND and personal challenges, through programmes that develop their skills and confidence, and outstanding support to help them to meet high expectations
- Develop students as confident and curious learners with increasing levels of independence
- Allow students to develop the skills, knowledge and attributes to succeed in Higher Education and/or employment
- Provide rich experiences to develop students’ cultural capital
- Equip students to play a full role as citizens in modern Britain
- Lead to outstanding progression, including access to the most competitive university courses and career routes
