Overview

A Level Geography provides students with the opportunity to explore how we shape the world we live. You will consider complex issues such as climate change, population growth and the preservation of diminishing natural resources. If you have a real interest in the world around you want to learn more about how we seek to manage our environment then A Level Geography is the perfect course for you.

Details

Our A Level Geography students follow the Edexcel specification. There are three examined units covering physical processes (such as tectonics, the coast, the water and carbon cycle) and human systems (e.g. globalisation and migration). There is also an independent investigation unit allowing you to research a topic of your own choice. Some recent projects have explored issues relating to coastal processes, urban regeneration and climate change.

A Level Geography students have been able to take part in discussion workshops on multiculturalism and regeneration and have enjoyed sessions delivered by national development agencies such as Water Aid.

Our students benefit from a close partnership with both Sheffield universities and are able to take part in tailored lectures and seminars to support their studies as well as visits to the university campuses to gain an insight into learning at HE institutions.

A number of specifications will be changing and prospectus entries are based on information we have to date. This means that course content may be subject to change.

What can I do next?

Geography is an extremely versatile subject which is a valuable foundation for Science, Humanities and Arts subjects at Higher Education. Geography students are highly sought after both by Universities and employers due to the unique range of skills they develop and their in depth understanding of the world. There are a wide range of University courses which value Geography as an A Level and the subject is particularly useful for students interested in further study, or work, in the areas of journalism, travel and tourism, civil engineering, surveying, environmental science, environmental law, economics, architecture, local and central government, the police, global development, scientific research and meteorology.

Geographers are able to develop a wide range of important skills which means they are often highly valued by employers.
